The Mexican Gold Libertad 1/4 oz coin is produced by the Mexican Mint (Casa de Moneda de México) and issued by the Bank of Mexico. Modern Gold Libertad coins contain 1/4 troy ounce of .999 fine gold and have been struck in 24k gold since 1991. Each modern 1/4 oz coin weighs approximately 7.77 grams and has a diameter of 23 mm. Unlike many other sovereign bullion coins, Mexican Gold Libertads have no fixed face value but are recognized as legal tender in Mexico, with their monetary value determined by their precious metal content and prevailing market conditions.
The Mexican Gold Libertad was first introduced in 1981, drawing inspiration from Mexico's historic Centenario gold coin, which was originally issued in 1921 to commemorate the centennial of Mexican independence. The original Gold Libertads were struck in .900 fine gold before the series transitioned to .999 fine gold in 1991. The coins are produced by the Mexican Mint, established in 1535 and recognized as the oldest mint in the Americas.
The reverse of the Mexican Gold Libertad features the iconic Winged Victory, also known as the Angel of Independence, standing atop the Independence Monument in Mexico City. Holding a laurel wreath and a broken chain, Winged Victory symbolizes Mexico's independence and freedom. In the background are the famous Mexican volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, associated with the traditional Mexican legend of two lovers.
In 2000, the Mexican Mint introduced a redesigned Gold Libertad series. The new reverse retained Winged Victory and the two volcanoes but presented the monument from a different perspective, giving the design a more expansive appearance. The 1 oz coin also received a redesigned obverse featuring Mexico's national coat of arms, surrounded by historical variations of the Mexican eagle emblem, including a representation from the Codex Mendoza.
The Mexican Gold Libertad is issued in five standard weights: 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz. Produced in both bullion and Proof finishes, the series combines Mexico's rich national heritage with the enduring appeal of solid physical gold. With its distinctive designs, annually varying mintages and status as an official Mexican bullion coin, the Gold Libertad offers investors and collectors in Singapore an interesting option for diversifying their physical precious metals portfolios.
