The 2025 Australian Lunar Series III Year of the Snake 1/4 oz gold coin was produced by The Perth Mint in Western Australia. Each coin contains 1/4 troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold and carries a legal tender face value of 25 Australian Dollars.
The Perth Mint introduced its first Lunar Gold Coin Series in 1996, drawing inspiration from the twelve animals of the ancient Chinese zodiac. Following the success of the original twelve-year program, Lunar Series II was launched in 2008, followed by Lunar Series III in 2020 with a new generation of designs. The continuation of the program into a third cycle reflects the enduring popularity of lunar-themed precious metal coins among investors and collectors around the world.
Perth Mint Lunar coins have developed a strong international following, particularly in Asian markets where the zodiac carries deep cultural significance. Their combination of precious metal content, annually changing artwork and association with each birth year's zodiac animal has also made them popular as gifts and keepsakes, in addition to their role as physical precious metal investments. The popularity of the series was demonstrated by the 1 oz gold and silver 2025 Year of the Snake bullion coins selling out at The Perth Mint.
The 2025 release celebrates the Year of the Snake, the sixth animal in the twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle. People born during Snake years are traditionally associated with qualities such as wisdom, intelligence, independence and charm. Recent Snake years include 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013 and 2025.
The reverse was designed by Perth Mint artist Sean Rogers and depicts a snake curled among bamboo stems. The design is accompanied by the Chinese character for snake, the inscription SNAKE 2025 and The Perth Mint's traditional "P" mint mark. As with other releases in the collection, the artwork was created specifically for its respective lunar year, giving every zodiac issue a distinct appearance.
The obverse features Dan Thorne's effigy of King Charles III, together with the coin's weight, purity and monetary denomination. As Australian legal tender, the coin combines its 999.9 fine gold content with an official Australian dollar face value.
Series III gold bullion coins have been issued in an extensive range of weights, including 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz, as well as larger denominations. The 1/4 oz format represents one of the smallest gold denominations in the range, providing an affordable way of owning physical Investment Precious Metals (IPM) in Singapore.
