The 2023 Australian Lunar Series III Year of the Rabbit 1/20 oz gold coin was produced by The Perth Mint in Western Australia. Each coin contains 1/20 troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold and carries a legal tender face value of 5 Australian Dollars.
The Perth Mint introduced its first Lunar Gold Coin Series in 1996, drawing inspiration from the twelve animals of the ancient Chinese zodiac. Following the success of the original twelve-year program, Lunar Series II was launched in 2008, followed by Lunar Series III in 2020 with a new generation of designs. The continuation of the program into a third cycle reflects the enduring popularity of lunar-themed precious metal coins among investors and collectors around the world.
Perth Mint Lunar coins have developed a strong international following, particularly in Asian markets where the zodiac carries deep cultural significance. Their combination of precious metal content, annually changing artwork and association with each birth year's zodiac animal has also made them popular as gifts and keepsakes, in addition to their role as physical precious metal investments.
The 2023 release celebrates the Year of the Rabbit, the fourth animal in the twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle. People born during Rabbit years are traditionally associated with qualities such as intelligence, creativity, vigilance and compassion. Recent Rabbit years include 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 and 2023.
The reverse was designed by Perth Mint artist Ing Ing Jong and depicts an energetic rabbit leaping among grasses with feathery plumes. The design is accompanied by the Chinese character for rabbit, the inscription RABBIT 2023 and The Perth Mint's traditional "P" mint mark. As with other releases in the collection, the artwork was created specifically for its respective lunar year, giving every zodiac issue a distinct appearance.
The obverse features Jody Clark's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, together with the coin's weight, purity and monetary denomination. As Australian legal tender, the coin combines its 999.9 fine gold content with an official Australian dollar face value.
Series III gold bullion coins were issued in an extensive range of weights, including 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz, as well as larger 2 oz and 10 oz pieces for the 2023 Rabbit release. The 1/20 oz format represents the smallest gold denomination in the range, providing an affordable way of owning physical Investment Precious Metals (IPM) in Singapore.
