Australian Lunar Series III Gold Horse Coin - 1/4 oz

The 2026 Australian Lunar Series III Year of the Horse 1/4 oz gold coin was produced by The Perth Mint in Western Australia. Each coin contains 1/4 troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold and carries a legal tender face value of 25 Australian Dollars.

The Perth Mint introduced its first Lunar Gold Coin Series in 1996, drawing inspiration from the twelve animals of the ancient Chinese zodiac. Following the success of the original twelve-year program, Lunar Series II was launched in 2008, followed by Lunar Series III in 2020 with a new generation of designs. The continuation of the program into a third cycle reflects the enduring popularity of lunar-themed precious metal coins among investors and collectors around the world.

Perth Mint Lunar coins have developed a strong international following, particularly in Asian markets where the zodiac carries deep cultural significance. Their combination of precious metal content, annually changing artwork and association with each birth year's zodiac animal has also made them popular as gifts and keepsakes, in addition to their role as physical precious metal investments. The Perth Mint describes the annual Lunar Series III release as one of its most anticipated programs.

The 2026 release celebrates the Year of the Horse, the seventh animal in the twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle. In Chinese culture, the horse is associated with strength, vitality, perseverance and the pursuit of success. People born during Horse years are traditionally said to possess qualities such as independence, charisma and a sense of adventure. Recent Horse years include 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014 and 2026.

The reverse was designed by Perth Mint artist Ing Ing Jong and depicts a magnificent horse with elevated hooves, displaying strength and poise against a background of mountainous landscape and grassland. Inspired by traditional Chinese horse paintings known for their expressive energy and movement, the design also incorporates the Chinese character for horse, the inscription HORSE 2026 and The Perth Mint's traditional "P" mint mark. As with other releases in the collection, the artwork was created specifically for its respective lunar year, giving every zodiac issue a distinct appearance.

The obverse features Dan Thorne's effigy of King Charles III, together with the coin's weight, purity and monetary denomination. As Australian legal tender, the coin combines its 999.9 fine gold content with an official Australian dollar face value.

Series III gold bullion coins have been issued in an extensive range of weights, including 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz, as well as larger denominations. The 1/4 oz format represents one of the smallest gold denomination in the range, providing an affordable way of owning physical Investment Precious Metals (IPM) in Singapore.
