Augustus Saint-Gaudens (March 1, 1848 – August 3, 1907), was a French-Irish sculptor, who immigrated to New York when he was just six months old. Raised in the US for most of his life, Saint-Gaudens left for Europe at age 19 to train in art and architecture. When he returned to New York, he achieved major critical success for his monuments commemorating heroes of the American Civil War. Augustus designed the Double Eagle coin for the US Mint near the end of his life, from 1905–1907. These coins he designed are still considered by many today, to be one of the most beautiful American coins ever issued to the public, with his designs adapted for other American modern bullion coins such as the American Gold Eagle coin.
