The British Gold Britannia 1 oz gold coin is produced by The Royal Mint in the United Kingdom. Each coin contains a minimum of 1 troy ounce of fine gold and carries a legal tender face value of £100. As an official British bullion coin, its weight and fineness are guaranteed by the UK Government, providing investors with additional assurance in its precious metal content.
The Gold Britannia was first introduced by The Royal Mint in 1987 and has since become one of Britain's most recognisable gold bullion coins. Originally struck in 22-karat gold with a gross weight of 34.05 grams, the Gold Britannia transitioned to 24-karat, .9999 fine gold in 2013, establishing the modern purity standard that continues today.
The figure of Britannia, however, has a history stretching back almost two thousand years. The name derives from the Roman Britannia, used for Britain and the Roman province established following the Roman conquest beginning in AD 43. Britannia subsequently emerged as a female personification of Britain and appeared on Roman coins during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in the second century AD. Centuries later, Britannia returned to British coinage in 1672 during the reign of King Charles II and has remained an enduring national symbol ever since.
The reverse of the modern Gold Britannia features Philip Nathan's iconic interpretation of Britannia, depicting the helmeted female figure standing beside a shield bearing the Union Flag while holding a trident and an olive branch. The design symbolises Britain's strength and maritime heritage, with the shield representing protection, the olive branch representing peace and the trident reflecting Britannia's historic connection to the sea. Philip Nathan's design has appeared on Gold Britannia bullion coins since their introduction in 1987. The obverse displays the reigning British monarch, together with the coin's face value.
Beginning in 2021, The Royal Mint introduced four advanced visual security features to the Britannia bullion design. These include surface animation that creates the appearance of waves behind Britannia, micro-text reading DECUS ET TUTAMEN (“An Ornament and a Safeguard”), tincture lines on the Union Flag shield and a latent security feature that changes between a trident and padlock when viewed from different angles.
Over the years, Gold Britannia bullion coins have been issued in a range of fractional sizes, namely 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/2 oz, alongside the standard 1 oz coin. With its modern .9999 fine gold purity, internationally recognised Britannia design and advanced security features, the Gold Britannia provides investors and collectors with a variety of weight options for owning physical Investment Precious Metals (IPM) here in Singapore.
